Travelling With Medical Oxygen Cylinders

Oxygen in refrigerated liquid form cannot be transported by air.

Medical oxygen cylinders containing oxygen in gaseous form may be accepted under specific regulatory exemptions and requirements.

Please note;

  • Travellers on flights to or from the United States are not permitted to use their own oxygen cylinders on board.

  • Additional oxygen cylinders required at your destination or for your return journey may be transported in the aircraft cargo compartment, subject to applicable regulations and restrictions.

  • Each oxygen cylinder must have its own regulator, as regulators cannot be changed during flight.

  • Travellers requiring medical oxygen must provide documentation from a licensed physician or qualified healthcare professional, such as a respiratory therapist, outlining;

    • The maximum flow rate required,

    • The maximum quantity of oxygen required per hour,

    • The total amount of oxygen required for the flight.

If you plan to travel with medical oxygen, please contact our Reservations team well in advance of your departure so we can help ensure all requirements are met.

Travelling With Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POCs)

Portable oxygen concentrators (POCs) are accepted on board, provided they meet Transport Canada requirements.

Before travelling with a POC, you must complete a Portable Oxygen Concentrator Form with your physician and present it at check-in. You may also be asked to provide the form to a flight attendant during your journey. The form remains valid for one year from the date it is signed.

Your POC must display the manufacturer’s certification confirming that it meets applicable aircraft-use requirements.

Travelling With Medication

If you require medication during your journey, we recommend keeping it easily accessible throughout your travels.

If medication must be kept cool, please bring your own cooler bag or insulated container, as we are unable to refrigerate medications on board.

Please note that Air North employees are not permitted to administer medication.

For the latest information about travelling with medications and medical supplies through airport security, we encourage you to review CATSA’s guidance on medication and medical items before your trip.

If you have questions about travelling with medical equipment, oxygen, or medication, our team is always happy to help.

Additional Seating Requirements

If you require additional seating to accommodate a disability, you will only be charged for one seat, regardless of the number of seats required.

If you have questions about travelling with an attendant or would like to discuss your travel needs, our team is always happy to help.
