Whitehorse, Yukon – April 1, 2017 – Air North, Yukon's Airline is pleased to announce its new direct service from Amritsar, Punjab, home of the Golden Temple and cultural centre of India to Yukon’s capital city, Whitehorse, the gateway to the Klondike goldfields. The first flight arrived in Whitehorse, Yukon today at 6:30 a.m. and was celebrated in Bhangra-style by over sixty local dancers.
Gurdeep Pandher resides in Whitehorse, but travels every year to the Punjab and said, "Many passengers including myself were delighted with this new direct service. Now we can travel back and forth more affordably, conveniently and enjoy Air North’s legendary northern hospitality; and of course, the warm chocolate chip cookie."
Gurdeep, a Yukon and Punjab cultural performance celebrity, moved to Whitehorse five years ago and is very involved in Yukon’s arts and cultural community. He’s celebrated for bringing the richness and vitality associated with his Punjab roots to share with Yukon performers. Today, the inaugural arrival of 4N Flt# 01042017 was celebrated by Gurdeep and over 60 Yukon performers with Bhangra song and dance including local youth, Leaping Feats and Breakdance Yukon. The celebration demonstrates a fresh interpretation of the openness to culture in Canada’s North and is a reflection of the beauty of our landscapes, people, peacefulness, and freedom.
"Every year travelers come from around the world to experience Canada’s iconic Yukon. This year is our sesquicentennial 150th anniversary of Canada and we’re proud to take this opportunity to grow our network to connect these two great cultural and openminded cities of the world", said Debra Ryan, Manager of Strategic Planning and Alliances at Air North.
Though today marks the first flight between Whitehorse and Amritsar this is not Air North’s first unexpected network connection as they offer annual charters to Las Vegas, Nevada, USA from the Yukon. As the airline has steadily grown since jet service commenced in June 2002, so do the routes and capacity for exciting new destinations that delight Yukoners and bring new visitors to our territory.
"I enjoy celebrating diversity through arts and culture while bringing the community together, it’s very important and fulfilling. We’re able to create something new and wonderful, while spreading the message of togetherness," said Pandher.
"This project was an amazing example of art imitating life. It was amazing that Gurdeep literally flew to the Yukon from India arriving just in time to record his vocals and lead everyone in the dance. We had an amazing all local Yukon film crew that made the magic happen on this shoot. I’m excited to share the great creative work being done here in the Yukon with Canada and the World", Daniel Ashley, Producer, Dash.
Air North's Whitehorse to India direct flight can be accessed on the first of every April, as an annual occurrence.
We hope you enjoyed this April Fool’s twist!
