Enhanced security measures at select airports

As of July 19, 2017, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will implement enhanced security measures affecting passengers flying to the United States. This impacts all passengers going through security screening at airports from which flights depart for the U.S. In Air North’s network, this applies primarily to passengers travelling from Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Kelowna, and Ottawa.

The enhanced screening measures include heightened inspection of personal electronic devices (PEDs) larger than a cell phone or smartphone, such as tablets and laptops. Since this may slow the overall screening process, which could lead to flight delays, Air North encourages you to arrive at the airport at least two hours prior to your scheduled departure when flying to the U.S. and to ensure that PEDs are easily accessible, with all covers and packaging removed.

New Airport Improvement Fee (AIF) for The Yellowknife Airport

The Yellowknife Airport has implemented an Airport Improvement Fee (AIF) of $20/ticket for passengers leaving NWT on or after July 1st, 2017 along with a 300% increase in landing fees also effective July 1st, 2017. These cost increases will result in travel cost increases for Air North passengers leaving Yellowknife of approximately $36/passenger for one way travel and $52/passenger for round trip travel. Air North along with other operators has expressed concerns about the magnitude of these increases but thusfar we have had no success in convincing GNWT to reconsider. Please click here for more information regarding these changes. Our Whitehorse/Ottawa market passengers will not be impacted by the cost increases.
