Unaccompanied Minors

An Unaccompanied Minor is a child between the ages of 5 and 17 travelling without the supervision of a parent or guardian. To make a booking for an Unaccompanied Minor, please contact our reservations team at 1.800.661.0407 (toll-free in North America) or (867) 668.2228.

What are the age restrictions for Unaccompanied Minors?

  • Children under 5 years old cannot travel as Unaccompanied Minors. They must be accompanied by someone 16 years or older.
  • Children aged 5 to 11 can only travel unaccompanied if they are using our Unaccompanied Minor (UM) Service.
  • Kids aged 12 to 17 can use the UM Service if requested by their guardian. If you choose to use the service, all UM Service travel rules will apply.

Are there fees for Unaccompanied Minors?

Unaccompanied Minors pay the standard adult fare plus a non-refundable fee of $52.50–$56.50 (depending on applicable taxes) per flight. Additional fees may apply for extra services like excess baggage or seat selection.

What in-flight services will be provided?

This depends on the flight route and duration. We offer non-alcoholic beverages and a light snack or meal. If your child has special dietary needs, please let us know when booking. Details are on our Allergies and Dietary Needs page.

How much time is needed for check-in?

Please check in at least 90 minutes before departure to complete the necessary forms. The parent or guardian must stay at the airport until 15 minutes after the flight departs.

What information is needed at check-in?

During check-in, the guardian must complete a form (available below) with the names, phone numbers, and addresses of the guardians at both the departure and arrival cities. The guardian picking up the child must show valid government-issued ID matching this information.

What ID will parents or guardians need?

Parents or guardians need valid government-issued photo ID at check-in and when picking up the Unaccompanied Minor.

What if my child is connecting to another airline?

Air North does not take responsibility for connecting Unaccompanied Minors. The UM Service is only available on non-stop or direct flights (where there’s a stop but no change of aircraft).

Can an older sibling accompany a younger child?

No. To accompany a minor between the ages of five and 11, the older child would need to be a young adult 16 years of age or older. In this scenario, the younger child would be required to use the Unaccompanied Minor Service. The older child would not be required to travel as an Unaccompanied Minor but would be eligible to do so. If the younger child was not booked in advance as an Unaccompanied Minor, boarding would be denied.

What are Air North's responsibilities?

We ensure the Unaccompanied Minor boards, flies, and disembarks safely. Parents or guardians may request a gate pass so that they can escort the child to the gate and remain with them until they board the flight. This is not available in all airports, and in such cases (or if the parent or guardian does not request to escort the child), the unaccompanied minor will be escorted by one of our passenger services agents. The parent or guardian must remain in the airport until 15 minutes after the flight has departed.

Upon arrival, Air North staff will escort the child to meet the designated guardian at the baggage carousel in the arrival airport.

Travel tips for parents or guardians:

  • Provide your child with entertainment like a book, tablet, or audio player. If it has Wi-Fi, make sure it’s in airplane mode before the flight.
  • While we offer complimentary drinks and snacks on almost all of our flights, packing extra food might be helpful.
  • Unaccompanied Minors will board before other passengers and disembark last to ensure our team assists them and that they have all their belongings.

Travelling with an Infant

To help make your trip as smooth as possible, please review the details below for travelling with your little one.

Does my infant travel for free?

Yes! One child under two years of age can travel for free if they’re seated on your lap. Your infant must be at least seven days old or have a doctor’s note saying they’re fit to fly. The accompanying adult must be 16 years or older. Please note that, per Transport Canada rules, one adult can’t be responsible for more than one infant or two children under the age of two. Complimentary seat selection is not included if you are travelling with an infant seated on your lap.

Can I purchase a seat for my infant?

Absolutely! If you’d like your infant to have their own seat, they’ll need to be in a car seat that’s approved for motor vehicles or aircraft use. During taxi, takeoff, landing, or whenever the seatbelt sign is on, or when instructed by the crew, you must either secure your infant in the seat or hold them on your lap. For more information on approved car seats, visit Transport Canada. The following standards are recognized:

  • CMVSS 213 or 213.1 (Canada)
  • FMVSS 213 (USA)
  • ECE R 44-03 or later (United Nations)
  • TUV DOc: TUV.958-01/2001 (Germany)
  • AU/NZS 1754:2013 or later (Australia and New Zealand)

What are the safety procedures for travelling with an infant?

Infants travelling on your lap must be held by an adult during taxi, takeoff, landing, anytime the seatbelt sign is on, and when directed by the crew. If your infant has their own seat, they must remain in the approved car seat during those times.

Does my infant need ID?

While ID isn’t legally required, we recommend bringing identification like a birth certificate or registry. Photocopies are fine!

Do I get extra baggage allowance when travelling with an infant?

Yes! Infants are allowed two pieces of equipment, which could include a car seat, stroller, or playpen. These won’t count toward your baggage allowance, but please make sure they meet our size and weight limits for your specific flight.

Are there child-friendly facilities on board?

Our Boeing 737 jets have baby change tables. Please remember to pack any baby care items you’ll need, as we don’t carry these on board.

Pregnancy

We’re happy to welcome pregnant passengers on board until the end of their 36th week of pregnancy. If you’re planning to fly after the 36th week, you’ll need a medical certificate from your doctor.

The certificate should state how many weeks along you are and confirm that you are fit to travel. Please bring the original, signed, and dated certificate with you to check-in.

If your departure is before the 36th week but your return is after, you will need to provide a doctor’s certificate for the return flight.
