Air North News

JUNE 19, 2018

WHITEHORSE, YT – JUNE 19, 2018 – Today Air North, Yukon’s Airline took its first booking for its new scheduled service between Whitehorse, Yukon and Mayo, Yukon. Increased mining activity in the Mayo region, in particular Victoria Gold’s Eagle Gold Mine, has driven demand for flights between the two communities.

"We are now seeing the direct benefits of increased mining activity in the territory," says Benjamin Ryan, Air North's Chief Commercial Officer. "As these mine projects develop, mining companies and their sub-contractors need to efficiently access mine sites in the area. Air North added Mayo to our network in response to that demand."

"We have hired additional flight crew, boosted our catering output, grown fuel services and added maintenance shifts at our Whitehorse base, all in response to the mine community's needs. In Mayo we have secured space at the airport terminal, and contracted local staff to deliver check-in and ramp services, equipment parking, cargo, and other related services. These are real jobs, contributing directly to Yukon's economy."

Mining partners like Victoria Gold Corp., JDS Energy & Mining Inc., and Alexco Resource Corp., and sub-contractors like Clark Builders, Pelly Construction Ltd., and Finning Canada Ltd. have worked closely with Air North to develop a mutually beneficial flight schedule for crew changes aboard regularly scheduled service to Mayo.

While demand from the mining community is providing the basis for the service, the residents of the community of Mayo will also experience the benefits of regular air access, including connections to Air North's entire network.

Greg Charlie, Director of the Vuntut Gwitchin Limited Partnership and Air North Director said, "We are pleased to be growing Air North’s network to another Yukon community. As we have seen through the Vuntut Gwitchin's 49% investment in Air North, affordable and accessible air service has significant economic impact for residents. Whether its allowing them to travel more easily, reducing the cost of shipping cargo or bringing travelers into their community to spend time and money, it is a positive boost to local economies."

Air North has engaged with the Na-Cho Nyak Dun First Nation and the Na-Cho Nyak Dun Development Corporation to ensure that this new service truly enhances the community of Mayo and the surrounding region. Air North has already developed a strong relationship with the Na-Cho Nyak Dun Development Corporation through its fuel subsidiary, Chieftain Energy, to supply fuel and lubricants within the traditional territory of the Na-Cho Nyak Dun First Nation and to bring a new cardlock fuel service to downtown Mayo in partnership with the local grocery store, Mayo Foods.

"We've been working alongside Air North and other users of the Mayo Airport for over a year to ensure that any steps necessary are taken to prepare the Mayo Airport for sustainable year-round air service," said Jani Djokic, Director of Business Development at the Na-Cho Nyak Dun Development Corporation. "Beyond simply providing for safe and reliable air travel, we see the airport as a key piece of infrastructure in a broader network that can create many socio-economic benefits to the community."

The initial route schedule will serve Mayo up to 5 times a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, beginning June 26, 2108 using Air North's ATR42 Turboprop. The schedule is designed to maximize connectivity with Air North’s other routes, especially Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton. Special, one-way introductory fares of $103 per person including all taxes and fees will be available for flights between Whitehorse to Mayo for a limited time.
